Deanery garden with traces of the past

On Västra Gatan with its listed wooden buildings, in Kungälv’s idyllic old town, this historic garden climbs in terraces up Fontin hill. The Bergfeltska Garden has been restored to how it was during the time of ownership by Dean Bergfelt, and gives us an idea of garden design around the turn of the last century. 

Down by the street blossom trees and flowering bulbs grow. Winding paths take you past shady borders, fruit terraces, beds of peonies and along to the rockery with its pretty plants, where you start to climb the stone steps bordered by the dry stone walls which raise the terrain up in terraces. At the top you reach the viewpoint, with the garden and Kungälv below. There are plenty of places to stop and eat a picnic if you’ve brought one with you. Dogs are welcome. Accessibility is good in the lower part of the garden where there are wide gravel paths.

The garden is always open to visitors and you can meet Kungälv’s Garden Society when they work there on Mondays during spring and autumn from 18.00-20.00.

Free entry. There are no toilets. If you want a guided tour (in Swedish), contact the society who give talks as well. Occasionally they also do guided tours of Strandparken, which was a finalist in Park of the Year 2017.
