An aesthetic experience like no other

Like a mysterious creature from an old saga, Tjolöholms Castle nestles between the hills on a beautiful peninsula south of Gothenburg. The wilderness is tamed almost imperceptibly in a unique castle garden shaped by the Arts and Crafts movement, influential then at the end of the 19th century.  The castle garden was planned by the same architect who designed the castle, Lars Israel Wahlman, and was laid out at the beginning of the 1900s.

The castle is prettily situated by the sea, with extensive views of Kungsbacka Fjord, in a sheltered valley surrounded by hills. The grounds of the castle offer a striking contrast to the surrounding coastal landscapes and the nearby sea is a constant presence. Your experience of the castle garden will be different, depending on both the time of day and the changing seasons.

At Tjolöholm there are extensive walking trails through protected deciduous woodland, over coastal meadows and rocky beaches. At the foot of the castle is a lovely bathing jetty and a sandy beach for the little ones.

The castle is open all year round for guided tours, and food and drinks are served in Storstugan café which is open at the same time as the castle. Parts of the castle garden, the worker’s village and the nature areas are fully accessible. Most paths are gravel. Certain parts of the castle garden are reached by steps. There are public and accessible toilets.

The castle garden is always open for visitors. Dogs on leads are welcome. You may have to buy a ticket for larger events but otherwise entrance to the gardens and nature areas is free. There is a charge for parking. Bus stop: Torpa smedja, 3.5 km. There are guided tours of the garden every day during summer, see the website for times and advance purchase of tickets. The tours are usually in Swedish. Groups can book tours all year round.
