A unique ornamental historic garden from the 1930s laid by the gold prospector Hilma Svedal, who came back from Alaska and built her dream garden in stone. A twenty minute boat ride from Strömstad gets you here. Open to the public during summer. Open for coach tours May to September.

EKA Miljörum is Sweden’s first environmental sanctuary. A park with a unique blend of stone, plants and water has been laid in an area of previously heavily polluted industrial land next to Lake Bengtsbrohöljen. Children can explore the stone maze and the water play area, and hop across the stones in the stream. There’s an interesting exhibition about the sanitation work that was carried out, and lovely barbecue areas where you can picnic. On the sunny steps you can enjoy a view of the Dalsland Canal.

The University park with the island residence of Marieholm welcome all. Inviting parkland areas go together with education and research. The site is the result of a collaboration between Mariestad County Council and the University of Gothenburg. Anyone interested in traditional building and gardening crafts, and landscape architecture, has a great opportunity to study them at close quarters here. Visitors are always welcome to the school of gardening and the residence on the island of Marieholm. The park and garden are open all year round with free entry. Contact: Vadsbo museum.

Follow the re-creation of a railway garden from the beginning of the 1900s. The work started in 2018. Narrow gauge railway and museum with diesel and steam engine. The steam engine needs complete renovation and is currently not in use. See the website for opening times.

This manor house by Lake Råda dates from the 1300s. The grounds are planted with both garden favourites and unusual plants. Lovely paths around the lake. The gardens are open all year round.

This lovely, restful park is situated on Strandgatan, with the Göteborgs Kex factory to the west and Gamla Torget to the east. There’s a shoreline walk along the adjacent river. The park consists of grassy areas with parkland trees, perennial borders with 80 different kinds of sweet smelling autumn flowering phlox, places to sit and a boules court. During summer you can borrow a sunchair and listen to the gurgling fountains. Nominated as Park of the Year 2017. The park is open all year round.

The original aromatic garden was laid in 1985 and is now a herb garden, growing a range of old fashioned herb varieties. At the heritage centre there’s a traditional ‘dubbelhus’ (double width house) containing a museum, as well as a small cottage, a longhouse, smithy, school, store and barn, with a large assembly room and café. A historic 18th century manor house, and garden inspired by the English style of that period. Walking trails in the grounds and in Tofta Nature Reserve. Villa Solfrid’s dormant Sleeping Beauty garden dates back to 1916, and was established by the gold prospector’s daughter Miss Elin Sundberg. The journey to bring this hibernating garden back to life has just started, and the hope is to be able to restore it to its blossoming former glory. You’re welcome to wander in the garden on Saturdays and Sundays in July, and Villa Solfrid can be visited with a guide on those days. Garden cafe every Saturday in July.
