Historic park with a long pedigree

Sundsby Säteri is a manor house dating back to the 1500s, but its golden period was during the 1600s when Margareta Hvitfeldt lived there. Ever since then, the layout of the site has looked fairly similar, with traces of the different time periods still visible in the park. Towards the end of the 1800s a Swedish-American family, the Hutchinson-Kays, leased the property, and it was then that the park and garden received much of the character that we see today, with lawns, flower beds, parkland trees, meadows and horticulture, as well as the smooth winding gravel paths made of sea shells. The head gardener’s residence with adjoining vinery also dates from that period.

Nowadays Sundsby is owned by the Municipality of Tjörn and is open for the general public. There are large open grassy areas, parkland trees, fruit trees, perennial borders, and a kitchen garden. Next to the grounds are walking trails of different grades of difficulty.  A demonstration hive is on site during summertime.

Guided tours in Swedish during the high season, see the website. A range of other events and workshops are arranged in the gardens such as food markets, music evenings and theme days, and organic horticulture.

Dogs are allowed. You can easily get round the park and gardens with pushchair/rollator/wheelchair, and parts of the natural surroundings are also accessible. The outdoor covered grill area can be reached by wheelchair. There is an accessible toilet, and marked parking spaces. The café's outdoor area is accessible but it can be difficult to get into the café with wheelchairs or rollators.  Parking for coaches is around 500m away from the manor. Bus stop: Sundsby korsväg.
